THIS IS A FAMILY PIECE NEVER BEFORE OFFERED FOR SALE - IN OUR FAMILY COLLECTION FOR 134 YEARS!!
BUY IT NOW BEFORE I CHANGE MY MIND ABOUT SELLING IT!
N.B. While the original purpose in 19th century Victorian times was as a chain for the lorgnette (hand spectacles / opera glasses) or a muff chain (for hand warmers), this is fundamentally a lariat slide necklace. Arguing over origins is irrelevant in 21st century use.
Also be aware that I have vetted any similar pieces on the World Wide Web, and they are all of lower-carat gold (usually 9K to 10K) and/or they resemble extremely ugly tubular chains with no sophistication whatsoever, indeed, looking like utilitarian ropes made to hold muffs or glasses.
IN CONTRAST, THIS GORGEOUS NECKLACE HAS WIDE, FLAT LINKS I HAVE NEVER SEEN ON ANY OTHER CHAIN OF THIS KIND!!
THESE ARE ORNATE, BRIGHT, SHINING GOLD LINKS THAT GLIMMER IN THE LIGHT, AND EXUDE A DEEP YELLOW GLOW, AS SEEN IN THE PHOTOGRAPHS.
THERE IS NOTHING LIKE THIS CHAIN!
THAT MUCH I GUARANTEE!!
IT IS A TRUE RELIC OF HISTORY!!
Please note that the best way to wear this necklace is over the head, on the slide, so that it hangs at about 2.6 feet per side. This is how it is worn in the pictures provided in this listing.
The best thing about this necklace is that it is convertible: If you pull the slide up high, you can go for a choker look, or have it fit a dress with a high bust. Alternatively, if your dress has a plunging neckline, you can move the slide down, so that it falls between your breasts. This is the ultimate in adjustable jewelry, as it will fit ANY DRESS or ANY COLLARED SHIRT that you need it to!!!
A true testament to the mastery of jewelry craftsmanship from bygone eras, you will never find jewelry made today of this quality - 130+ years from now - that could still survive being worn every year as a part of your go-to collection!!
Condition: This necklace was purchased by us nearly a century & a half ago, and was not new even then. As such, the buyer must expect small repairs, twisting (towards the bottom), and inherent fragility of links. The entire thing is delicate, and for civilized use only. However, it is worn several times a year (at least 10 to 20 times per year), so it is eminently wearable by a woman of elegance & class. Simply exercise due caution. The most recent work was about a decade ago: service to the tassels and securing the diamonds. The rest hasn’t been worked on in about 100 years.
Note: The antique condition of the slide on this necklace demands a U-shaped metal insertion to prevent slippage. The current piece holds the slide as-is, and can be adjusted, gently, to any length. Should the buyer prefer another system to operate the slide, the seller offers to cover for the named buyer (within 1 year from date of purchase) the one-time cost (UP TO $1,000 ONLY) of a professional jeweler (of your choice) for slide modification (springs, ratchets, or whathaveyou). Receipt must be provided to the seller (to us) by the buyer for reimbursement. However, during our lifetime use of this necklace at the finest functions in the world, including in the presence of actual Royalty, the U-shaped insert (as currently inserted) is all that was ever required for proper function and adjustment.
Modifications: Please note we are happy to replace the portrait of the nobleman with a gem of your choice (we have a garnet ready - or a ruby, a diamond, a sapphire, or an emerald could be substituted), provided the cost to us does not exceed $2,000 USD (any stone & associated mounting work you desire above that price, then you would have to pay us the difference between your $2,000 credit & the final cost of the gem + mounting expenses). This ONE-TIMEstone substitution offer ONLY applies if you purchase the necklace at LIST price (currently, $17,000 USD as of 1/1/2026). No gems will be substituted if you successfully purchase this necklace on offer (i.e. for less than $17,000 USD). However, if you purchase on offer, we are happy to include the existing garnet substitute stone for fitting at your own jeweler, if you would like, and upon request only. For anyone requesting stone substitution on this necklace, expect about 1 week additional working time to mount the dark red garnet, and 3 to 4 weeks (or more) to source a stone of the unusual marquise cut & size required (cat’s eye shape).
FYI the jeweler who conducted minor repair work on this necklace about 10 years ago proclaimed:
“THANK YOU FOR LETTING ME WORK ON A MUSEUM PIECE!!”
Provenance:
Purchased by the current owner’s great grandfather in Verona, 1892.
